Creating CompassioNate Care Bags in honor of my son, Nate 💕
Can you help me serve with love and compassion? Wouldn't it feel good to do something kind?
This month, as we come up to the 2-year anniversary of Nate's passing, I am asking for your help.
Let's join forces and put together care bags to offer to people in need around the country and globe!
Rather than putting together a batch of bags in Rochester, I want to broaden our scope, reach more people and give more people a chance to make a difference in their own communities.
Here's how to help support this mission of extending kindness and compassion directly to people in need in your area.
⭐ Ask your friends and community to donate items or cash to help you fill as many bags as you'd like - people from across the country have gladly helped me fulfill the needs for our bags in the past.
💜 What to include? Think about the specific needs in this season in your area for those who are unhoused and stock accordingly
.
Here's a list of what we usually include to use as a starter guide, but please modify as you like:
- t-shirt, underwear, and socks
- hat and gloves
- donated shirts, sweatshirts, jackets
- hand and foot warmers
- soft protein or granola bars
- Kleenex, flushable wipes, lip balm, comb
- hand sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen
- flashlights, emergency blankets, rain ponchos (ideally sturdy reusable ones)
- a little cash and/or gift cards for food
- small notebook and pen
- harm reduction supplies like Naloxone and drug testing strips (reach out to your local harm reduction organization - they are generous and glad to provide what they can! Also see if your state offers free supplies)
- Never Use Alone card or flyer with phone number (print them out from the pdf on cardstock)
- cards with local phone numbers for housing, mental health, harm reduction, and/or recovery supports in your community
- notes of encouragement or care (messages like “You matter” or “Keep going!”
(these can be handmade or pre-printed - search "kindness cards" and see what comes up).
✨Pull together some friends and load up some bags with necessities to support those in need - you could do anything from small baggies to string duffle bags (or anything in between). Have fun with it - snacks and music help!
🌟 Find volunteers to take some bags to carry in their cars and hand out when they see people in need. I've found people are eager and grateful to be able to do something that allows them to directly reach and help people.
💜 Send me a note with a picture of your crew and your bags - I'd love, love, love to see how Nate's love is rippling out into the world! Let me know how many bags you've added out into the world. And receive my deep gratitude. 💜
What this mission is all about:
As a way to keep loving my son and to extend compassion and care to people who are someone’s child,
we are putting together CompassioNATE Care Bags.
You can read my story behind this project: Why CompassioNate Care?
The bags will be created and carried by volunteer community members who are willing to offer them when they see people in need. The heartfelt stories from those who have helped offer over 560 bags since August 2023 have been amazing!
The ripple of kindness and love is deep and wide!
It’s my hope that we can expand our reach beyond the organizations that already serve these folks who struggle with homelessness. It’s also my hope that more hearts will open and may be a beacon of love and hope in dark times.
Maybe we’ll even help save a life. I know we’ve saved at least one.
Share this project with others who'd like a chance to help in order to expand our circle of possibility if you feel inspired to do so!!
We all know someone touched by substance use or mental health and this is what often leads to housing and food insecurity.
Help me invite more people to turn toward our fellow humans in their most vulnerable times.
I’m here as a mom spreading love, kindness, compassion, and care, and I hope you'll join me.
I promise the heart expansion you’ll feel by joining me will be like the Grinch’s heart… growing 3x in one moment!!
❤️I am deeply grateful to RAW Recovery, the NY Recovery Alliance, and Samadhi who have helped me include critical harm reduction supplies in these bags. Please consider supporting these organizations in the compassionate, vital work they are doing.
Thank you!
